Leather Chairs - many different types

Back in the day when chairs were first introduced to people, they were crudely made, four legs and a back, if you were lucky. Usually they were made of old wood and done so by farmers and ranchers. Then came the towns and people needed something to sit on. Through the years furniture manufactures were realizing people wanted more comfort in the chairs they had so they started making chairs with arms and adding different materials for the upholstery, such as fine leather.

During the eighteenth century is when the leather high back chairs and arm chairs started to become popular. Only the rich could afford this type, but it soon caught on and more and more people of all walks of life wanted them. Dining room chairs with a cushioned back and seat, wrapped in leather was ideal and was a status symbol among the rich. Today you can find them in almost any home, in a variety of shapes and colored leather.

Let’s face it; leather is one of the most comfortable materials around to lounge in and on. It is soft, and it smells good, depending on the grade of the leather of course, there are some that feel like plastic, while others feel like you are sinking into clouds. The ‘easy chair’ is just that, one sits down in it and it is easy to sit in. usually they have low back with high arms and is always well padded.

When one says they have a club chair, it usually means it is a gentlemen’s chair, these used to be found back in the turn of the century in mens clubs. The men would go to their clubs, no women allowed, and would sink down into a very comfortable chair to have their brandy and cigars. This is where the word ‘club’ chair comes from and is still very popular today.

Many very comfortable leather chairs are the overstuffed ones, you know, you sit down in them and it seems the chair swallows you into soft leather all around you. Although you don’t see them as often they were very well liked in the forties and fifties. These chairs have extra padding that gives them the feel of being overstuffed, and are very comfortable.

One of my favorite leather chairs, is the tub chair; it looks like a tub with one side cut out. Now talk about sinking down and never getting up. With the leather upholstery you can sit for hours and read by the fire and relax and watch some television. I have one in red leather and have had it forever, it seems the more I use it the better it is, comfort wise. Then came along the recliner, a chair that has a mechanism that lifts the foot rest up so you can lay back and take a snooze. These are very comfortable as well and you can have them in all different colors of leather.

Here is a video I found of a review of a great leather chair. You may be able to learn something from it so check it out. I hope you enjoy it.
